Budget Stretcher - What's The Answer?

This is an OPT-IN list ONLY! If you feel that you have received

***********************************************************

Greetings from Grandpa Terry,

Almost everyone has concerns about whether they are managing
their money the way they should in order to provide for their
current and future needs. Some of these concerns are just a
matter of learning a few organizational skills while others
may jeopardize their family's survival.

As a Budget Stretcher subscriber you receive valuable ideas
on ways that you can use to better manage your money every
week in the newsletter. But this is simply an overview and
doesn't get to the root of your money questions or provide
all of the free tools you need to establish a comprehensive
money management program for yourself.

A Lifetime Membership to Budget Stretcher Premium provides all
of that and a lot more and makes it available to you anytime
you have a question. You simply log in and everything you need
is right there.

Now let me talk about your real question, the cost of a Lifetime
Membership. Until December 24, 2009 you can become a member for
only $28.50 which is 50% off the normal $57 membership fee. That
is about the cost of 10 gallons of milk or 14 loaves of bread.

But what is the cost of not becoming a member? That's almost
impossible to determine. It could be just a few dollars on your
grocery bill or 10s of thousands of dollars by implementing a
personalized debt repayment schedule that is available to all
members free of charge. That is entirely up to you and how many
of the money saving techniques you want to use.

There is no doubt that you will save many times the cost of a
Lifetime Membership with very little effort on your part. And,
since it is a Lifetime Membership you will keep saving month
after month and year after year.

What happens if you join and then change your mind? That's
easy. Anytime within the first 30 days of your membership you
can simply email me and I will refund your membership fee
immediately. You don't even need to give me a reason. You get
to keep anything you have downloaded up to that point.

So, if you haven't already taken advantage of my Christmas
Special 50% Off of Budget Stretcher Premium please do so soon.
This offer will expire at midnight, December 24, 2009.

Please take a few minutes to visit the below page to learn more
and become a Lifetime Member of Budget Stretcher Premium Today!
(Note: You can even order by check or money order if you like).

    Carbonite Problems

    Terry,

I don't know that you want to use this as a subscriber tip, but something I just became aware of.  I've used Carbonite for over a year now and have been happy with it.  My only complaint, really, is that it slows down my computer if I allow it to update while I'm working.  To update otherwise, I have to leave the computer on all night, and then it doesn't get time to cool down.   I recently bought an external hard drive and decided I would copy all of my files and pictures to the external drive so I could free up some space on my laptop.   After doing that, I went to the Carbonite site to set it so that it would also backup the files from there.  That's when I learned that they don't have the capability of doing that.   I don't want to put the files back on my computer because that defeats the purpose of cleaning up the "C" drive, so now I'm having to rely entirely on the external drive for my files.  Just thought you, or your readers, might be interested.  Maybe you'll have a suggestion for me on how to backup the backup!!

    Subscriber Tip #2
    College Kids

I have a daughter in her last year of college: money is always a struggle for her. She calls or IMs me every so often to say that she needs deodorant, feminine pads, razors, etc. This Christmas when she comes to spend the holidays with us, for part of her gifts, I will put together a large box of toiletries, so she won't have to worry about running out of necessities. I will also include some snacks and perhaps a plush toy, since she loves stuffed animals.

If you have a child in college, this is a good way and a good time to take advantage of all those manufacturer coupons stacked with store coupons to purchase these items. You'll be getting a double bang for your buck, or perhaps even free things. I like to shop at Rite Aid where I can buy a number of things for next to nothing if done right. I will also receive single check rebates, which will help with the savings, too.

    Subscriber Tip #3
    A Few Hours = $1500

Don't be afraid to tackle new projects around the house just because you haven't done it before! My new (to me) house was in dire need of insulation, especially with winter coming. Contractors all wanted $2,000 and more to insulate my attic (at R38).

I went online to a major insulation company where I found that they had a video showing step by step what needs to be done and they even had an online calculator showing how much insulation I needed. I purchased the insulation (and got free blower rental) and installed R49 insulation in my attic for under $500! That's a 75% savings for just a few hours of my time!

    Kitchen Tips

    11. Remove odors from your fridge by placing a vanilla extract soaked cotton ball inside. Another popular method is to leave a cup of baking soda or a slice of lemon in the fridge at all times.

    12. Cleaning behind your refrigerator will keep it running longer and more efficiently. Another fridge cleaning tip: Make sure the unit is level. An unlevel refrigerator works harder than it needs to and wastes energy.

    13. Store plastic wrap in refrigerator - it will prevent it from sticking.

    14. A good trick when you go away on vacation is to place a baggie with a few ice cubes in the freezer. If a power failure occurs while you are gone and the food thaws and then refreezes you will know about it when you get home.

    15. Use a powder puff to dust flour on rolling pins, pastry boards and cookie sheets. Store puff in a margarine tub with a small amount of flour for quick dusting jobs.

    16. Leftover Safety - If food has been contaminated with germs from a person's mouth, it should be tossed. For instance saving baby food when you have fed the baby from the jar is hazardous.

    Grandpa Terry's Update

    Welcome to The Budget Stretcher!

    Watch The Health Care Bill

I read an article from Bankrate that spells out a how the new health care bill, if passed, will affect us. The first part of the article is a little scary because the government is mandating everyone, with only a few exception, have health care and imposing stiff penalties if you don't.

I'm not sure what the final bill will look like but I do believe that it's important to keep an eye on how things are going. Here is an article that will help:

How the health reform bill would affect you

    Loony Laws

I have something else that may be fun to list in the newsletter. Every state and many citys have laws that are just crazy. I'm going to list one of those law each week. Let me know what you think!!

    Living On What's Left

Are you one of those people that pay your bills no matter what? That is an admirable trait to have when managing your money. You made the bill and you feel you are responsible for paying it. Good for you.

Now let's talk about how much money you have to cover your household expenses after you pay all of those bills. Your household expenses would include your groceries, car gas, school lunches, and all of the other stuff that it takes to run a household. Do you have enough to pay this bill?

All to often, people tend to pay their bills and try to live on what's left. This never works unless you have enough money left to cover these at home expenses. The grocery bill will always run about the same, you will always need about the same money for gas, etc. In other words, you need enough to live on.

I have seen this time and time again. Another bill is made and the money comes out of the household budget because there is no money available in any other category. Then what happens?

Many people resort to using their credit cards to cover their regular expenses. Since there is no other money available to pay their increased credit card payments, that also has to come out of their household expenses. This is how many people find themselves in over their heads.

There is only one way to change this cycle. You have to allow enough money in your budget to cover the things you need. You must do this even at the expense of your other bills. That could put you in a position that you can't make some of your payments, but at lease you won't be increasing your debt, except for possibly late fees. If this is your situation you need to seek help to reduce the payments on your other bills.

Naturally, there are many ways to cut your household expenses that will allow you to pay more toward your other bills. You can save a lot of money on groceries by using coupons, buying generic, not using processed foods, etc. The internet is full of ideas and tips to help you save.

When you develop or revise your budget, always put the emphasis on your household needs. Once you have determined how much you need to get by, then you can see what is left for other bills.

    Good Afternoon Grandpa Terry !!!!
Long time no chat ! =( Hope & pray you are well !!!

First thought today was to hop on before the week got to busy-- and wish you A Very Happy Thanksgiving !!!!

Second thought was I read the article from Kathy on inexpensive Christmas decorating. Got me thinking do you have any old articles on inexpensive Christmas gift giving?

We often have those people that we would like to give something small to- (school bus drivers, mailmen, teachers, trashman, or a kind neighbor, and of course the children have "friends" that just can not be forgotten or left out) BUT of course those of us who read your newsletters know we NEED to stick to a budget.

Any articles or suggestions would be a great help !!

    Thanks a bunch !!
Again have a great Thanksgiving !!!
    Crystal (from DE)

    My Response:

    Hi Crystal,

And a Very Happy Thanksgiving to you!!

I checked my articles and couldn't find any articles on inexpensive gifts. I did find an article that gives several ideas that you may want to consider. Here is the link: Giving Christmas Gifts on the Cheap

    <><><><><><><><><><>

    Hi Grandpa Terry,

I have a question about paying on credit cards. We are currently over 3 months behind on our credit cards. My husband's business is WAY down, and I had knee surgery this summer without health insurance. the doctors have been great about working on me without insurance, and have actually discounted my account substantially. I am just paying each-doctor, anesthiologist, etc. about 10.00 each until I get it done. Which is working as I can see the balances go down some.

My problem is my credit card bills. With the big reduction in our income from my hubby's business way down, there just isn't the money to make these huge credit card payments. Second job isn't an option as we have children that can't be left alone. We have the creditors calling constantly. I have talked to them and written them each about 3 letters. They won't accept a small payment of 10.00 a month. However, I would like to keep PAYING on the bills. I would like to try to pay them. What I would like to do is for them to stop these exorbitant late fees and high interest rates, close the accounts and accept whatever I can pay. How can I get them to accept a small payment on a regular basis?? Currently, I do not have any big amount of money saved up to settle with them. Our house payment had gotten behind as well, and we just got that current. I did write them to ask them to stop phone calls since they won't listen to what I have to say. Any ideas?

    Thanks, Ann from KY

TIPS FOR BUYING FURNITURE ON A BUDGET
    by Alyssa Davis

If you are a college student or have just moved into your first apartment, you probably have a tight budget for furnishing your home. Because you are likely to move in a few years, it is a good idea to keep furniture basic and easy to part with down the road. Or, you may be in a position where you simply can't afford to walk into a regular furniture store and bring home what you like.

In any case, there are generally two routes you can take when hunting for furniture on a budget. You can either go for cheaper furniture sold at large discount department stores or retail warehouse stores, or buy second-hand furniture sold by private parties or used furniture shops.

    Buying New Furniture

It is not difficult to find new and inexpensive furniture that looks presentable and even has some style in its construction. However, the quality of the materials used and the workmanship will fall short, which will undoubtedly affect the durability and sturdiness of the piece. If you are buying furniture that will not go through a lot of weight or wear, such as a side table or display shelves, you can get away with the poorer quality. If you anticipate using the furniture only for a couple of years, buying new from discount places can turn out to be a good decision.

    Buying Used Furniture

Buying used furniture does not mean getting the low end of the deal. People sell their furniture for various reasons, such as when they are redecorating their home or no longer need a particular piece in their new home. You may find others who have to relocate and are eager to sell some relatively new pieces in excellent condition. If you take the time and effort essential to bargain hunting, you may find fantastic deals that will be worth the legwork.

    Resources

Your local newspaper or pennysaver are good resources to keep an eye out for furniture ads or garage sales in your neighborhood. Bulletin boards at your office, school, or supermarket are other sources. The popular online marketplace, Craigslist, is another great place to search for second-hand furniture. Don't forget thrift stores and charity organizations, which usually have a continual supply of used furniture of all kinds and styles.
    Before You Buy

As with buying furniture in general, consider the dimensions of the space you have available and determine the measurements of the furniture you are considering. If you have contacted a private buyer and indicated interest in his or her furniture, make sure you have a good look at the item before you commit to the purchase. Test out sofas and coffee tables, inspect upholstery, springs, and stability of the legs or shelves, and ask the owner if any repairs are necessary. Also find out whether the furniture has come from a pet-free and smoke-free environment.

    Refinishing Pieces

If you are good with your hands and have an interest in home projects, consider getting pieces that are solidly constructed and in a style you like. You may think about repainting or staining a worn coffee table or wooden chair to better fit into your décor. You may also want to get new hardware to update an old dresser or wardrobe.

    Greetings from Grandpa Terry,

***Special 50% Offer Available Between 11/22/09 to 12/24/09***

This is your opportunity to become a Lifetime Member of Budget
Stretcher Premium (BSP) at a 50% discount but only for a limited
    time. Please read on...

I must caution you in advance. When your first take a look at
the BSP web site you are going to experience a feeling of being
overwhelmed by everything that's there. This is normal. That's
one reason I took the extra time and put the most important
actions that you must take to get started on the BSP home page
for easy access. When you've finished that you can begin surfing
    the site. It's actually fun...

In a hurry to learn about this Special Offer?
    http://www.homemoneyhelp.com/decsubspecial.htm

Twenty-Seven emails basically asking the same thing! "When are
you going to run a Special Offer for Budget Stretcher Premium?"
I received these just in the last two weeks. All of them had
visited the web page, liked what they saw but really didn't want
to put out the $57 for a lifetime membership during these times
of high prices and uncertainty about their financial future.

It's rare that I receive two emails with the same theme let
alone 27. I knew I had to respond to these folks and do
something. Times are hard right now and for most a membership to
BSP is exactly what they need to fight their ever increasing
expenses. They know that Budget Stretcher Premium can make their
battle with their finances and rising prices much easier to deal
with and help them make the most of their paycheck.

Effective immediately and running through Christmas Eve
December 24, 2009 I'm going to offer Budget Stretcher Premium at
50% off for a Lifetime Membership. You will never have to pay to
    renew your membership.

You may remember that a couple of months ago the price was
$19.95 for the first year and $9.95 each year to renew. That was
never ending. If you stayed a member (like 92% do) you would be
paying the renewal fee forever. With a Lifetime Membership, even
at the $57 regular price, it would only be a little over 5 years
before you would start saving money.

But, for this special you will receive a Full Lifetime Membership
to Budget Stretcher Premium for only $28.50. Does that still
sound like a lot of money to you? Let's look at just 4 of the
premium resources you will receive free with your membership
and see how much you will save. These prices are paid my
    non-members:

Living Within Your Means - The Easy Way $47.97
The Complete Budget and Bill Organizer $19.95
    The Debt Elimination Summary $39.95
Budget and Credit Card Calculating Forms $14.95

Just these 4 items Total $122.82.

Most free subscribers like the Money Saving Tips in the
newsletter. As a Premium Member you will have access to
thousands of Tips and don't have to wait for the newsletter to
receive them. They are on your BSP web site that you can access
    24/7/365.

A lot of free subscribers don't like the advertising and
Specials they receive. As a Premium Member you will never again
receive advertising of any kind from Budget Stretcher.

Budget Stretcher Premium pays for itself. If you use just a one
or two of the tips, downloads, and other resources at BSP you
will save much more than your Lifetime Membership Fee. And, if
you take advantage of the free Debt Elimination Summary you
could very well save 10s of thousands of dollars while paying
off your debt years earlier than you normally would.

If you decide to stay a free subscriber, that's fine. I promise
I will continue to provide you with a quality newsletter. But,
if you are looking for a way to finally secure your family's
financial future then a Lifetime Membership to Budget Stretcher
    Premium is the answer.

As always, you are never at any risk by ordering from Budget
Stretcher. I will give you 30 days to try your Lifetime
Membership to Budget Stretcher Premium. If you aren't satisfied
for any reason just email me and I will immediately refund your
    money, no questions asked.

On Christmas Day the price will go back to $57 and quite frankly
will still be a bargain. But if you invest only $28.50 during
the month of this special you will secure your Lifetime
Membership and never be billed again.

What you order today will be worth much more tomorrow. I am
constantly adding quality resources to help you better manage
your money and make a better financial life for you and your
family. Whenever I find something I believe will benefit you
then it's added to the BSP web site. There is something new
    added nearly every week.

Why not take advantage of this Special Offer. You have nothing
to lose and everything to gain. Once you see the BSP web site
the Lifetime Membership fee will be insignificant.

I've developed a special web page just for this Special 50% Off
Promotion. Please take the time to check it out and order before

    Christmas Decoration Savings

My neighbor was going to throw away some Christmas deer because half the lights wouldn't work. Long story short I was given four of the deer and I couldn't get them to work either but I wasn't about to throw them out. I went and purchased new strings of lights and some cable ties for a grand total of $12 I got 4 new deer to display this year thats like paying $3 a piece instead of what the stores are charging. (the cheapest I seen was $30)I'm proud of myself and hope this inspires others not to be discouraged if your displays won't work cause you can fix it!!

    Subscriber Tip #2
    For Santa's helpers:

Utilize all those little pieces of left over wrapping paper to wrap the stocking stuffers. It gives the illusion there are more gifts than there really are. I tend to go with shampoo, toothpaste, deodorant, AA/AAA batteries ~ etc for my older boys. I wrap the packs of gum - everything! No leftover bits of paper and the kids love it. The big guys realize Mom would be buying this stuff anyway but they usually get one big gift/gift card instead of a couple of packages so they appreciate the effort to make it look like everyone got "lots."

    5. Use an egg slicer to slice apples or mushrooms.

    6. Leftover pancake batter makes good fried onion rings. Separate and let soak in batter for fifteen minutes. Fry in hot oil.
    7. Don’t throw out leftover coffee. Freeze it in icecube trays, and when you don’t want to make an entire pot, you can get your cubes out of the freezer and pop them in the microwave.

    8. Dry Mustard will remove onion odors from your hands or cutting board. Rub in, then rinse off.

    9. Use plain baking soda or salt as a fire extinguisher.

    10. Put rice in your salt shaker to keep the salt from getting hard. **

    Blueberry - Raspberry Crumble

1 (21 oz.) can blueberry pie filling*
1 (21 oz.) can raspberry pie filling*
    1 white cake mix
    1/2 cup nuts, chopped
    1/2 cup (stick) margarine, melted

In a greased 9x13 baking dish, combine pie fillings. Mix the rest of the ingredients until crumbly and sprinkle over pie fillings. Bake at 375° for 25-30 minutes until bubbly and golden brown. Serve warm.

    * You can use any pie fillings you want, like peach or apple. I even saw a recipe once where they used a (16 oz.) bag of dark cherries and a (16 oz.) can of crushed pineapple. Another recipe had blueberry pie filling and a can of crushed pineapple, with coconut sprinkled on everything.

Grandpa Terry's Tip of the Week

    Constant Credit Card Payments

Editor's Note: I have ran this article in the newsletter many times because this is an exceptionally easy way to pay off your credit cards without coming up with a bunch of extra cash.
Are you trapped into making only minimum payments on your credit cards?  I hope not.

Minimum payments decline as the balance on the credit card declines.

Let's take a credit card with a $2000 balance at 15% interest to use as an example.  You would expect to pay about a $40 (2%) monthly payment when you start making your payments:

By making the minimum payment only, it will take you 13 years and 11 months to pay off your credit card and you would expect to pay $2,126 in interest.

However, if you continued paying that $40 until the credit card was paid off, it would only take you 6 years and 6 months to pay off the credit card and you would pay about $1,100 in interest.

You could save over $1,000 in interest and pay it off in half the time.  This is what simply starting with a set payment and sticking to it could save.  If you can afford that $40 payment when you start, odds are it won't hurt you later.

Now, let's take that a step further.  What if you paid just $10 more, $50 instead of $40?

That same credit card could be paid off in 4 years and 7 months with only $740 in interest.

Here is how it breaks down:

    Minimum Payments - $4126 total payments - 13 years 11 months
    Paying $40 per month - $3100 total payments - 6 years 6 months
    Paying $50 per month - $2740 total payments - 4 years 7 months

The fact is that every dollar you add to your payment goes toward the balance of the credit card.

I recently completed a Debt Elimination Summary for a couple that had $46,500 in credit card debt on 6 credit cards.  Most people would be considering filing bankruptcy in that situation but this couple were determined to pay it off.

Here are the results of the Summary:

They were already paying $785 per month on the credit cards.  They decided they could afford to pay another $200 to eliminate their debt sooner.

Minimum Payments - The credit cards would never be paid off.
    Paying $785 per month - $78,761 total payments - 8 years 5 months
    Paying $985 per month - $66,059 total payments - 5 years 8 months

Would you have thought that you could pay off over $46,000 in credit card debt in just 5 years and 8 months?  I've seen this done dozens of times.  It can and it does work if you stick to it and quit using your credit cards.

If you have multiple credit cards and would like to pay them off as quickly as possible the best way to do this is to write down your credit card name, balance, interest rate and minimum monthly payment.

Then you must decide which credit card to pay off first.  There are two schools of thought on this.  Most experts believe that you should pay off your highest interest credit card first.  You would definitely pay less in the long run.

However, if you need to see results quick to give you an incentive to keep going you could start with the credit card with the lowest balance.

Which ever way you choose, simply add as much money as you can spare to that credit card until it is paid off.  Then take the amount you were paying to the first credit card and add it to the next credit card payment and so on until they are all paid in full.

Interest, late fees and penalties are wasted money.  The only way to avoid this is to use cash to make your purchases when ever you can.

Thanks for your terrific website. I am hailing from the UK.

Can you advise please: what proportion of income should be spent on presents? And how do you apportion spending? For example,  I have 14 nieces and nephews that I send cash to at Christmas, but another reader might have only one or two young relatives to buy for.

    Many thanks,
    Julia

    My Response

    Hi Julia,

I like to work Christmas present buying backwards.  In other words you figure out your budget between now and Christmas to see if you have extra money to buy presents. This will permit you to spend only cash on Christmas presents and not use your credit cards.

Each person's ability to buy Christmas presents is different and a dollar amount can't be set in all cases.   Christmas presents should be paid for before Christmas and not after.

Sending even $10 a piece for your 14 nieces and nephews will run you $140.  It's always easier to make a list of everyone you intend to buy for.  Then set a dollar amount for each person.  Add this up and see if your finances can handle that expense without using credit.  If you can't afford that amount go through your list and make adjustments.

I would recommend that you consider joining a Christmas Club and start saving for next Christmas.  It's easy and you won't miss a few dollars each week.

    I hope this helps,
    Grandpa Terry

    Holiday Decorating on a Budget
    by Kathy Wilson

Let me say the Holidays are my favorite reason to decorate! Here you will find the reason this issue is so special, great ideas for holiday decorating, all of them easy on the pocketbook, and some of them are free! Have a wonderful holiday, and remember to stop every day to "smell the roses"!

  • *For a beautiful outdoor wreath(or indoor) without spending a fortune on craft supplies, try to remember you need not cover the wreath with decoration to make it special. Try just a few craft store "picks" in one corner, with a big bow. Or get some wire star garland (.69 cents at my store)and just wrap it loosely around the wreath. Hot glue some found pinecones to a corner, or try some old wooden ornaments. You also don't necessarily need to buy an expensive evergreen wreath to decorate, and inexpensive grapevine or straw wreath can be dressed up as well.

*Spray paint clay pots and saucers a metallic gold for sparkling coasters and utensil or candle holders for the season.

*If you have extra lights after stringing the tree, wind some through your potted plants for a special way to bring the sparkle throughout the room.

*For a simple but beautiful centerpiece, set three or five candles of different heights in the middle of the table on a tray, then surround the bases of the candles with seasonal items. Low cost ideas? Cuttings from your Christmas tree, or from evergreen trimmings in your yard are a great first layer. Then how about shiny apples, glass ornaments turned hanger side down, found pinecones, nuts, wire star garland, leftover ribbon... By the way, the same idea can be used for Thanksgiving, just substitute fall leaves, squashes, mini pumpkins, etc...

*Buy those bags of cranberries when they go on sale for $1, and fill bowls that hold pillar candles, or fill a simple glass of water with them to just a few inches below the top, and put a floating candle in. Nuts can work the same way, but they tend to be more expensive. However, is you have a nut tree in your yard...

*Hollow out the center of an apple as a candleholder, and tuck a few tiny greens in between the candle and the apple. Just be sure the flame never comes near the twigs. A little lemon juice sprinkled on the cut part of the apple will help keep it from browning as much.

*Have a lot of scrap Christmas fabric from years past? Use it to make a simple square patchwork quilt as a throw for the couch, and add a lot of holiday spirit to the room! (Hint: use old blankets as batting- if you don't have any, check your thrift stores. Just be sure to wash in hot water, and dry at least 20 minutes in your dryer. White flat twin sheets on sale make great backing fabric.)

*Cut two of a simple holiday shape from felt, then sew or fuse them together, decorate with permanent markers or fabric paint (if you wish), and hang all over the house! Some very simple shapes could include stars, packages(glue or paint on some ribbon), mittens, snowmen, boots, Christmas trees, stockings, candy canes, gingerbread men (trace them from your cookie cutters) and the list goes on! If you have a rustic theme this year, it's not necessary to embellish them at all!

*Place a few inexpensive glass balls in a bowl and embellish with a few sprigs of greenery or some leftover ribbon. If you don't have an extra bowl (it is the holidays, after all!) try decoupaging a box with leftover Christmas wrap, or cover with a little fabric and glue.

*Take down your pictures and wrap them like a gift, then hang them back on the wall for great holiday cheer! You don't have to do this all around the house, how about just in the entry, or maybe the dining room?

*Place votive or pillar candles on a small mirror used as a tray. Tie sprigs of greens or cinnamon sticks on the candles with ribbon or raffia. Be sure the flame is far enough away from the embellishments!

*Make paper trees out of a square of pretty paper, preferably use a paper that is a little stiff. Simply roll the paper into a cone, and glue the edge with a hot glue gun. Perhaps some gold glitter or squiggles of paint to dress them up, and they will be beautiful on your mantel or as a centerpiece with greens. Try experimenting with different colors and textures...this would be a great place to use leftover cardstock or handmade paper! You could also do this with a piece of stiffened fabric.

*Tie greens or ornaments to the chandelier with a little Christmas ribbon, just make sure they don't hang low enough for any candles on the table to catch them on fire.

Above all, be creative, and have a wonderful holiday with those you care about!

    Stain Removal

Try cooking spray to take paint and marker stains off of hard surfaces. Spray on the spot directly and wipe off in a circular motion. Stains come right off.

    After Purchase Savings

When shopping, it is so hard to find just the right deal. When I purchase anything, I always save the receipt. That way, if I see an item on sale after I have made the purchase, I can go back and be reimbursed the difference. Most stores will do this within a two-week to 30-day period. Check with the store when making a purchase to see what their policy is. Stores will honor this even if the item goes on sale at another store.

I just purchased a stovetop for my kitchen. Two weeks after I made the purchase, I saw the same stovetop on sale for almost $100 less. All I did was take in my receipt and the ad and they credited my account the difference.

    Hot Chocolate at Home

My kids love the creamy hot chocolate at McDonald's. However, the price tag (over $10) is pretty steep with four kids. We've tried many of the box hot cocoa mixes and even tried making our own from milk, cocoa powder and vanilla, but they were never quite the same taste.

Recently, we discovered using store bought chocolate milk and warming it slowly in a saucepan. There's nothing extra to mix, and it's really creamy. We add a spoonful of whipped topping and even drizzle on a little chocolate syrup. It's delicious. Our local convenience store sells three half gallons for $3, so it's really a good deal! We stumbled across this idea when we needed to use up some chocolate milk a day or two past the expiration date.

Now I don't think we'll use anything else for hot chocolate!

    Kitchen Tips

    1. Nearly everything can be cut in half -- use only half a dryer softener sheet, half the recommended amount of detergent, half a cotton ball, etc. Try it on anything you can think of - if it works, you save money, if it doesn't, what do you lose?

The same idea goes for quick dinners. If you're putting together, for example, Hamburger Helper (or another "instant" meal), consider using a 1/2 pound of meat per box (or just make up 2 boxes at a time, with a full pound of meat). Most of us actually get far more protein in a day than we need, so cutting back to a 1/2 pound of meat doesn't hurt any of us.
How about instant drink mixes? If you're buying mixes that don't have the sugar added (which, by the way, is cheaper than buying the mixes with sugar already in them), think seriously about how much sugar you mix in. Do you REALLY need to use a full cup of sugar with that small packet of flavoring? Or could you cut it back to 1/3 or 1/2 cup and decrease the amount of sugar your children are getting in each serving?

The next time you're simply following directions on any grocery item, take a moment to evaluate the claim before you do as it says. You may save yourself some money!

    2. Disposing of grease and fat from foods. I save the jars and lids that I get whenever I purchase tomato sauce and mayonnaise. When I have bacon drippings or old oil from fried foods, I pour the fat into these jars. When the jar gets full, I put the top back on and put the jar in the trash. This will prevent your drains from being clogged with this oil and keep your trash cans from getting messy inside.

    3. Save plastic milk containers, fill with water and freeze. Use in camper iceboxes or coolers. Also these can be used to freeze colored water or juices in for later use in a punch bowl.

    4. To avoid tears when peeling onions, slice first, then slip the bands of skin off.

    Nan's Sugar Cookies

These are the best sugar cookies you will ever eat!

    2 cups sugar
    1 cup shortening
    3 eggs
    1 tsp. vanilla
    1 cup buttermilk
    3 tsp. baking powder
    1 tsp. baking soda
    6 cups flour

Cream together the sugar, shortening, eggs and vanilla. Add buttermilk. Stir well and add the dry ingredients. Mix until smooth. Roll into balls and drop about 3 inches apart on a greased cookie sheet. Lay a clean dish towel flat on the counter. Place a clean glass upright in the center of the towel. Gather the towel at the top of the glass and twist so that the towel is drawn tight against the bottom and the sides of the glass. Dip bottom of towel-covered glass into flour and press cookies flat. Place a drop or two of water on the top of each cookie and spread around. Then sprinkle sugar on top. Bake at 350° for 5-10 minutes. Makes 4 dozen.

Grandpa Terry's Tip of the Week

    Some Inspiration, Hopefully!

I hear negative comments all the time about money matters. "I can't" seems to be the way most of them start out. That's no way to get control of your money, right!

I bet you were thinking I was talking about the email I receive or the people I come in contact with. Actually, I'm talking about myself.

Many years ago I had every excuse in the world why I couldn't pay my bills and actually got aggravated at my bill collectors for expecting me to pay when I didn't have any money.

On one occasion, I received a letter in the mail from a loan company calling me irresponsible. I decided right then and there that I was going to show them. I filed for bankruptcy!!!

That was a decision I regretted for several years. That wasn't the end of it. I continued to live way beyond my means year after year.

Quite frankly, it was the aggravation, humiliation and embarrassment of being turned down every time I applied for a loan that made me realize that I was the problem, not the lenders.

My wife and I decided it was time to change things. We had small kids and was having a hard time buying the essentials. We owed our kids more!

It took about 3 years of skimping to finally get to the point that we had enough money to pay our bills on time and buy what we needed. That was a miserable 3 years.

Believe me, I know there are circumstances that you can't control that can have a devastating impact on your budget. My first daughter only weighed 3 pounds 5 ounces when she was born. She was in the hospital for 7 weeks and that hospital stay cost over $12, 000.

That doesn't sound like much now but when you are only making $72 a week for 42 hours work it was a fortune.

The bottom line is that I had to take some drastic measures to do what I needed to do to properly support my family. Even after 30 years it still seems strange giving advice to others about their money problems after what I've done in the past.

While your money problems may be a little different than mine, most of us have what it takes to overcome them. I've seen it done many times.

Please take this from someone that's been there. Dig deep within yourself and find out what the problem is and then make a plan to solve it. You may not like what you have to do but, in the end, you will be very thankful that you did.

    Hi Grandpa Terry

I am debating on refinancing (as I am always looking for a way to save money) and I received this offer. I was wondering if you have ever heard about this company before and if so, what do you think? It seems too good to be true.

If it is legit, I would like to share the info with your readers as well.

Thanks so much for all you do! Keep up the great work!

    Trish
    New Jersey

    My Response:

    Hi Trish,

I checked http://www.carnegiemtg.com/ and they appear to be a legitimate lending company although
I've never heard of them before.

I don't believe this is a very good deal.  First, you would only be saving $38,880 over the 30 year life of the mortgage if you still have 360 months to pay on your existing mortgage.  However, if you have made very many payments you would save even less or nothing at all.

For example.  Let's say you've paid on your existing mortgage for 24 months.  Here is how the costs stack up:

    Your current mortgage:
    Payment  $1154 Not including escrow
Multiply by 336 more payments you have to make -  $387,744

    Carnegie Mortgage proposal:
    Payment  $1046 Not including escrow
    Multiply by 360 - $376,560

To find out exactly the savings or cost simply multiply the number of actual payments you have left on your current mortgage by $1154.  Then compare this to the Carnegie proposal of $376,560.

I hope this helps.  If you have any other questions just let me know.

    All the best,
    Grandpa Terry

    <><><><><><><><><><>

    Hi Grandpa Terry~

You are starting to seem like an old friend!

I was inspired by the article this week about second jobs. Because the harvest here has been delayed by bad weather we are not very busy at our dental office right now. I work four days a week, but see the possibility that that may go down to three, and I have been considering a second, part-time job. After reading this article, and after the day I had yesterday, I don’t think I’m going to do it, unless, of course, the perfect one presents itself (I am not going looking).

Yesterday a couple of ladies visited our farm. They were acquaintances, but now are on the way to being friends. We walked all around the farm, from horse to horse, petting and feeding treats, and trading horse stories. It was a wonderful two hours. They commented several times about how peaceful and relaxing it is out here. Maybe my calling is to open our farm to visitors who need peace and relaxation. After they left, it felt like that was the direction I need to go. For one summer we worked with an addictions center to provide “horse therapy”. It was amazing what happened between the clients and the horses, and I have been upset every since that the addictions center did not continue the program. Of course I would like to get paid for my efforts, but if it isn’t going to happen, then I think I’m going to respond to the people who tell me they are down, invite them out for my own version of “horse therapy” and see what happens.

Yes, as you mentioned once, I am committed to getting our bills paid, but I also realize there is more to life than money. The older I get, the more I realize the best things in life really are free! It’s a good place to be!!

Have a great week, and thanks for all you do!

    Brenda

    My Response:

    Hi Brenda,

It's always nice to hear from you.

It's unbelievable how much a second job could cost you. A better alternative is doing something like you are considering (the horse therapy) at home. It's something that will be very satisfying to you, will help others and could produce an extra few dollars. Since you are undecided on whether to charge for the service, I would recommend accepting donations. I believe many people will think the service is worth something.

You bet there is more to life than money. Every year at Christmas time I put a note in the newsletter asking everyone to take a few days off from their everyday worries and just enjoy their family and friends. Very seldom do our fondest memories have anything to do with money.

    Have a great week,
    Grandpa Terry

    <><><><><><><><><><>

    Hi Grandpa Terry,

I need some help and I am getting it from all around but none of it seems to be good advice to me. I have been getting your newsletter for about 2 years now, thanks to my Aunt, Joyce Moseley Pierce and thought maybe you might be able to give me some ideas.

My husband is self employed and the company that he sub contracts with has lost their big contract, so thus he lost his work and our income. There is no prospect for work until next year which is not a guarantee, but I don't know what to do right now. I had put back several months of budget money just in case, I am so very thankful that I did but it is almost gone.

The advice that we are getting from everyone is to file for bankruptcy, everything in me says no, but I just don't know what to do. I am not asking for you to give me the magic pill and to make this all go away, I just need some advice and I felt like you would have good advice and could possibly help me think of other options. I can not work due to health issues so the burden is on my husbands back and now that we are running out of money, it is a stress for us all. I do believe that Yahweh is our provider and will help us through whatever we will go through, I know He wants us to pay our debts and this is what I want, but I also don't want to be the guy that is on the top of his house when there was a flood and asking Yahweh for help and missing the boat, helicopter and what ever else was sent to save him and he passes each of them off saying that Yahweh will save him. i need wisdom!

I thank you for your help and if you would rather not even tread this territory I understand but as they say, it never hurts to ask!

    Karrel

    My Response:

    Hi Karrel,

Tell your aunt Joyce Hi for me!!

I don't mind treading in this territory at all.  You are right that there is no magic bullets to make it all better but there are things that you can do.  But you have to understand that extreme financial problems require extreme solutions.

While bankruptcy is the last option it is an option that you may have to consider.  But make sure you try everything else before you make that drastic move.

The first thing that you need to do is prioritize your spending.  Please read the article at the below link and follow it to the letter.  This will ensure that you make the most of what money you do have.

    Setting Your Financial Priorities
    http://www.homemoneyhelp.com/articles/priorities.html

Second, have your husband use what ever talents he has to earn extra money.  Simply place an ad in the newspaper, ask friends or family if they have any work or if necessary go door to door.  Now is not the time to be picky about what kind of work you do.

If push comes to shove you may need to apply for assistance through your state.

I'm sending you a copy of my ebook that will explain what you can do a lot better than I can in an email.  Here is the link to download:

Living Within Your Means - The Easy Way
    (Only Available To Premium Members)

This should keep you busy for a while.  If you have any more questions after reading the article and my ebook don't hesitate to let me know.

    All the best,
    Grandpa Terry

    A Spending Plan
    The Dollar Stretcher Blog
    by Gary Foreman

    Dear Dollar Stretcher,
From the total salary what percentage is ideal to spend for various needs, and how much to be saved for future?
    Dee

It's a question that we all must answer. Even if some of us would prefer to ignore it! Because, with rare exceptions, we all have to deal with having just so much money to cover all our expenses. And, if we spend more than we take in for very long we get into trouble.

Let's look at a "typical" spending plan. Then we'll discuss it.

    Category% of Total
    housing35
    food15
    auto15
    insurance5
    entertainment 5
    clothing 5
    medical 5
    everything else 5
    Savings 10

The first thing you'll notice is that I didn't include any taxes (either income or Social Security). You can choose to do that if you like (in fact, it's a real eye opener). But for our purposes it's easier just to deal with your 'take home' pay.

The second thing to notice is that this is a guideline, not a straightjacket. The truth is that very few of us will fit into this exact framework.

So if your spending doesn't match, don't despair! Analyze the situation before you panic!

For instance maybe your entertainment spending is closer to 10%. Is that a problem? Maybe not, if you're young, single and sharing an apartment with 3 friends. In that case what you save on housing is going for entertainment. So overall you're not spending more than you're making.

Or you may be a city-dweller where housing is very expensive (think NYC). But because of public transportation you don't own a car. So the extra you spend on housing is offset by the reduced spending on transportation.

You get the idea. Tailor your spending plan to your needs. And, adjust it as you go through life and your needs change.

One other thing to notice is that housing, food and auto make up the lion's share of the expenses. That's true for almost everyone.

It's in those three areas that most families get into trouble. Most often by buying a home or vehicle that they cannot afford. But once the commitment is made it's very hard to undo.

You might wonder where a certain expense goes. For instance, household cleaning supplies. Many people buy them at the grocery store. So are they a housing or food expense? The answer is: it doesn't much matter. Put them whever it seems best to you. The key is always putting them in the same place, so you can compare results from month to month.

Another common question is what should I do with charitiable contributions. You can either take it off the top (like taxes) or create a separate category for it. If you believe that contributions should come before your expenses you'll want to take it off the top. If you think that it's part of your regular spending then include it as another expense category.

Finally, let's look at Dee's question about saving. There probably isn't any single right answer. Because saving isn't really an expense. It's an investment for a better future.

So I prefer to think of savings in terms of priorities. Before I can put money aside for savings I need food and a reasonable shelter. Probably also need dependable transportation to get to my job.

But after those basic needs are met, it's time to begin saving some money. Not necessarily the 10% in our guidelines, but 2, 3 or 4%. Enough so that there's some money set aside for the so-called unexpected expenses that happen to us all (dead appliances, home and auto repairs, unexpected sickness, temporary lack of work).

One other comment about savings. Paying off debt (especially credit card debt) is a little like savings. Consider payments used to reduce the amount owed as if they were savings.

Finally, for those of you who don't want to bother with any of this. I know what you're thinking: I'm fine and don't need any help monitoring my money. Just remember that most people who are in trouble today said the same thing when everything looked good to them.
